Crocifissi, also known as Simone di Filippo, born possibly around 1330, was a well established Bolognese painter, with a leading workshop in that city. He produced many devotional works, possibly with collaborators or assistants, under private commission, as exampled by his piece in the Ashmolean Museum, a folding triptych of The Crucifixion, The Angel Gabriel with Saint, and The Virgin and Saint James.

The later piece was from the 1380s, as was his piece, The Coronation of the Virgin, now in the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, A triptych of the Virgin and Child with Saints, now in the Louvre, as well as his painting of The Nativity, now in the Uffizi Gallery.
