Master of Virgo inter Virgines

Born: Active 1470  - Death: 1500    Located in: Flemish and German Painting

A painter with origins in the Netherlands, the Master of the Virgo Inter Virgines is named for a painting depicting the Virgin surrounded by Saints, now in the Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam. He is noted to have worked in Delft, executing up to twenty known paintings in what was one of the three most active Dutch workshops towards the end of the 15th Century. (Kren and Marx, Web Gallery of Art)

Of the Master’s work in the Uffizi Gallery is the Crucifixion, probably painted in the 1490s. The dramatic representation shows an artist whose skill of expressive qualities is unconventional; from the contoured poses of the figures to the variety of bold colouring, the work is emotionally charged.
