School of Bonaventura Berlinghieri ~ Biography
» School of Bonaventura Berlinghieri Paintings

13th Century

The Crucifixion - Madonna and child with Saints, is a work attributed to the School of Bonaventura Berlinghieri, probably painted between 1260 and 1270. It comes from the Berlinghieri workshop, a family of painters active in Lucca. There was Berlinghiero and his sons Barone, Marco and Bonaventura, the latter becoming the most celebrated of the family.

The work itself bears a strong influence from the new wave of Byzantine art, and is one of the earliest paintings of the “Eleusa Virgin”, or Affectionate Mother, an iconic image throughout the Gothic art of the 14th century. (Kren and Marx, Web Gallery of Art)
