Giottino ~ Biography

1324 – 1369

Born Tommaso di Stefano, called Giottino, the painter may have otherwise been known as Giotto di Maestro Stefano. The artist is documented by the biographer, Giorgio Vasari, but it is not known for certain if Giottino is the same artist who also painted in the Vatican in Rome, Giotto di Maestro. He is known as Giottino for having studied the works of the master painter, Giotto di Bondone (1267 – 1337). His father was also a painter, known for his naturalist style of painting, called Scimia della Natura, which means Ape of Nature. All of Giottino’s known works were produced in Florence, unless he is in fact the Giotto di Maestro from Rome as well. .

The artist’s most famous piece was painted for the church of San Remigio between 1360 and 1365, which is a large panel of the Lamentation, titled the Pietá of San Remigio. The piece now hangs in the Uffizi Gallery. His other known works are the frescos in the Chapel of San Silvestro in the Basilica di Santa Croce di Firenze (Basilica of the Holy Cross in Florence), depicting the miracles of Pope Silvestro. He may also be the creator of a piece titled Apparition of the Virgin to Saint Bernard and possibly a fresco titled, Virgin and Child with Saints.
