Pisan artist of the late 12th century ~ Biography
» Pisan artist of the late 12th century Paintings

This period of Pisan art, as with much of Western Europe, is marked by a transition from the Romanesque style to the Gothic style. Though, the Gothic style in painting did not emerge, especially in Italy, until around 1300, and was mostly prominent in architecture and sculpture. This is most prominent in Pisa in the architecture of the Baptistery of Saint John, which was begun in 1153, among other Pisan monuments of art such as the Leaning Tower, begun in 1173.

One of the best known Pisan artists of the late 12th century was Bonanno da Pisa, who worked in the Pisa Cathedral and the Monreale Cathedral. He worked mainly in architecture and sculpture.
