Master of Hoogstraeten ~ Biography
» Master of Hoogstraeten Paintings

Active 1490 – 1530

Hoogstraeten, sometimes spelled Hoogstraten, is a municipality in the Belgium province of Antwerp; Antwerp itself having a long history of important Dutch and Flemish artists.

The so called, Master of Hoogstraeten is an unnamed painter known to be the creator of a series of seven panels of the Sorrows of the Virgin, from the church of Saint Catherine in Hoogstraeten. The works are said to have been painted around 1505, and the artist may have been a pupil of Hans Memling (1430 – 1494), but also show the influence of Flemish artists like Gerard David (1460 – 1523) and Hugo van der Goes (1440 – 1482). (Kren and Marx, Web Gallery of Art)

The painting, Madonna and Child with Saints Catherine and Barbara, now in the Uffizi Gallery, was once attributed to Hugo van der Goes, but is now claimed to be a work of the Master of Hoogstraeten.
